Bonobo falls short of the tree – Today’s top 5 tracks

Kerala – Bonobo

Electro extraordinaire, Bonobo, has returned in 2017 with somewhat of a more mainstream sound. He has classically been labelled as the hero of obscure synthetic music but, whilst his new album still maintains electronic sounds, it feels somewhat more of a James Bay album. There are some good sounds throughout the dreamy, down-beat album but in comparison to some of the ground breaking music Bonobo became known for releasing, this feels somewhat disappointing. That yard stick is Bonobo’s own, however. His music is never not good, just not as good as it once was.

Mother & Father – Broods

This is the first track on what is an absolutely stunning album, Evergreen. The Kiwi duo are brother and sister with Georgia doing most of the singing and Caleb the instrumentalist. There are some songs on the album you might not realise you already knew such as L.A.F. which received some attention back in 2014. If you get a chance, listen to the entire album once and then again, and again and again. It is seriously addictive.

Ill Mind Of Hopsin 5 – Hopsin

The 5th of the “Ill Mind Of Hopsin” singles, the 5th is special as it tears apart lazy people, the lyrics are a mix of brutal and inspiring and for any fan of Hopsin this is definitely a favourite. Hopsin famously doesn’t drink, do drugs or smoke and positions himself as a positive influence in hip hop music. He is a controversial figure but nonetheless has released 4 hugely popular studio albums.

Knuckles – Moose Blood

Moose Blood are what emo pop punk bands were 10 years ago, except that trend peaked a long time ago so what are they playing at? Well, it’s hard to not be infected by their music if we’re being honest. It’s enjoyable if not a little already tried and tested. They won’t win any awards for being unique but I really don’t think that’s what they’re going for. Some are calling it the emo revival so maybe a new generation is getting to hear the intensely passionate brand of alternative that hooked the previous generation?

The House Of The Rising Sun – The Animals

Let’s throw in a classic, why not? This is a contender for the title of most people’s favourite song, up there with the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody. Apart from being the best version of the song, what makes it even more compelling is that no-one knows who actually wrote The House Of The Rising Sun. Rumour has it that it was written by a prostitute with the “House of the rising sun” being the name of the brothel she worked at. The lyrics do make this song in all honesty but what makes this version so good is the 60’s feel that the Animals bring to the track that has now forever defined it.
