Building steam with a grain of salt – Today’s top 5 tracks

Too Young To Live – All Tvvins

All Tvvins have been described as “math-rock” – the last band to receive that label was The Foals and, well, didn’t they do well for themselves. The term clearly relates to the feeling of precision in the guitar riffs and the steady drums that all sound so calculated and executed to a degree of specificity. Don’t let that put you off though, very well ordered though it might be it’s as funky and light-hearted as you want from a fresh new indie band. Having only released their debut album in 2016 it’s early days yet but we predict you’ll be hearing more of them over the next few years.

Tristan – Patrick Wolf

Hailing from South London, Patrick Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist playing such instruments as the ukelele, piano, the viola and of course… the laptop. His brand of electronically perfected music reached it’s biggest audience after releasing his debut album Wind In The Wires from which this track is taken. With clear indie influences, this track showcases Wolf’s expertise in being every part of the band all by himself.

Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt – DJ Shadow

Throughout DJ Shadow’s long and illustrious career he has been difficult to label with a genre. The are clear elements of hip hop beats throughout his records which frequently feature samples from speeches or films. Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt is from DJ Shadow’s debut album, Entroducing…, released in 2001 which kickstarted his career. This song is as wistful as it is dangerously addictive, even Chevrolet (who famously featured this track in their commercials) agree with that sentiment.

Ocean Drive – Duke Dumont

Duke Dumont has gained a moderate amount of attention over the past 5 years considering his appeal as a talented dance producer. Raved about by legendary Radio 1 DJ, Annie Mac, Duke Dumont has had 2 UK number 1 singles in 2013 and 2014 before somewhat disappearing into the background of the scene. Ocean Drive only made it to number 42 in the UK singles chart but that doesn’t matter to us, we still love it.

Punk Rock Princess – Something Corporate

One of the biggest songs of the pop-punk era, Punk Rock Princess is from their second album, Leaving Through The Window, released in 2002 and going on to help define an era of raw guitar punk pop in the early naughties along with the likes of Blink 182, Sum 41 and Bowling For Soup. The title of this track says it all right?
