Using archived recordings to create masterpieces – Today’s top 5 tracks

Bad Girl – SOULS

SOULS is the project of Hackney producer, David Gledhill, who uses rare pieces of archived recordings to create his masterpieces. Bad Girl features vocals from Ozella Jones who was incarcerated in a Florida prison in the 1930’s when she recorded this. Gledhill threw himself into the project as part of the grieving process when his wife, Tracey, sadly died as a result of Cystic Fibrosis. He is quoted as saying “I do wonder if that is one the main reasons for me wanting to release these old voices from the past”, in reference to his struggle with his wife’s death. The debut SOULS album, Release, is hauntingly beautiful and uplifting, as brass instruments combine with the incredible sound of voices originally recorded on vinyl. An outstanding album if you get a chance to listen to it all, I highly recommend you do.

Good Goodbye – Linkin Park ft. Pusha T and Stormzy

Linkin Park have returned with a brand new album, with this track featuring British grime heavyweight Stormzy. Nu metal and rap are hardly strangers to one another (think earlier Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit), but we’re just not sure British grime really works with it. Here are some of Stormzy’s masterpiece lyrics in this song ”Mandem we’re linking tings in parks, now I got a tune with Linkin Park”…. What does that even mean? It’s quite average if we’re being honest, it’s just not as groundbreaking as you would have hoped when you first heard the words “Linkin Park” and “Stormzy” in the same sentence.

All Night – Crystal Fighters

“Party all night, party all day, party all da-ay”! From Crystal Fighter’s latest album, Everything Is My Family, they return with their distinctive ukelele-dance feel that they’ve mastered so well over the past 10 or so years. Crystal Fighters took their name from an unfinished opera by vocalist Laure Stockley’s grandfather during his final months of insanity. Laure reportedly found the manuscript in her reclusive grandfather’s home in the Basque countryside and became obsessed by it’s prophetic-like contents. Vierich explains “we decided we wanted to finish the opera and do a live show that would get across some of the amazing, crazy stuff that was in this book. So we crafted this live show around the book and wrote new music based on its directions and looking at Basque music as a whole”. I think that probably relates more to their earlier music, however, because I doubt the opera manuscript was about “partying all night and day”. Crystal Fighters manage to write consistently awesome music so if you get a chance to go through their back catalogue, you definitely should.

The Sky Was Pink – Nathan Fake (Holden Remix)

Norfolk born Electronic artist Nathan Fake released his debut album in 2006 and has since gone from strength to strength, becoming a widely known name on the scene. His atmospheric brand of electro-house is distinctive and has earned him critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and Mixmag as well as others. He released a new album this year and you’re probably wondering why that isn’t on today’s list… well sometimes it’s just good to show off some of the tracks that got the artist where they are today!

Punching In A Dream – The Naked and Famous

Some slightly older indie-electro now with The Naked and Famous. This album was released in 2010 and was one of the first to pioneer the new-wave indie-electro genre along with the likes of MGMT, paving the way for bands such as Chvrches. The album went on to receive numerous awards throughout 2010/11 but their popularity has dwindled in recent times with new albums that didn’t quite attract the same level of attention. Still, they’re a talented young band who have got plenty left in them so don’t be surprised to hear more of them in the future.
