Vampire Weekend’s Chris Baio releases new solo material – Today’s top 5 tracks

Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend is releasing a new album entitled Man Of The World from which this track will be the first single. Baio has been releasing solo music since 2012 as a DJ who embraces electronic sounds – a significant shift in style from Vampire Weekend. As a matter of fact, Baio’s solo music is impressive, showcasing a mix of different styles, sounds and influences to develop his unique brand with this song sounding like “Bowie meets a computer”. It’s refreshingly upbeat and a definite soundtrack to summer 2017.

Surprise Hotel – Fool’s Gold

Fool’s Gold combine African and Middle Eastern influences with guitar indie-pop to incredible effect. The bassist, Luke Top, and vocalist Lewis Pesacov are Israelis who emigrated to the USA when they were young but the band also includes members from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, a super cultural group. The distinctive guitar riff and overall feel of the song is a mix of African rhythms, Hebrew lyrics and Western guitar, culminating in a really special sound.

Scattered – Xavier Dunn (Feki Remix)

Xavier Dunn is an Australian singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. So far he has just released one EP, BIMYOU and a few singles, including this excellent remix from Feki. Dunn, whilst relatively unknown, had a song that went viral – an acoustic cover of Iggy Azalea’s song Fancy which got to number 1 on the US Spotify viral charts.

Alaska – Maggie Rogers

This song first gained mass attention after a clip of Pharrell Williams hearing it for the first time (and being visibly moved by it) went viral. Rogers recorded her debut album The Echo in a broom closet which she made into a makeshift studio. Aged just 23 and with a hugely evident passion for writing and singing music, Maggie Rogers clearly has a long career ahead of her.

1998 (Delicious) – Peace

Peace released a new album last year in 2016 but that doesn’t matter, we’re going to talk about a song from their 2012 EP, 1998 (Delicious). This song is a cover of a trance classic by Binary Finary but the stunning spin that Peace have put on this track has turned it into a ballad of epic proportions. Some outstanding bass and atmospheric guitar demonstrate the real talent of the Birmingham-based indie band.
