Alt J

BREAKING: Alt J release new album Relaxer | Listen here.

Relaxer is as unique as it is spontaneous

Alt J have released their long awaited third album, Relaxer, which is now available to stream on Spotify.  The album includes a cover of House of The Rising Sun as well as the three songs they recently released: 3WW, In Cold Blood and Adeline. Listen here:

In typical bizarre Alt J fashion, the biggest surprise is that Relaxer is only 8 tracks long. Short but sweet, the album takes some risks and tries out some brand new ideas. Whilst some of the songs sound undeniably like Alt J, others such as Hit Me Like That Snare feel to be influenced by songs such as Monster Mash.

Of course, being weird and experimental is nothing new for Alt J. The LSD-inspired band are constantly innovating with their music, showing off their harmonies and unique vocal styles. The band will be taking Relaxer on the road this summer as they take on a global tour.

The one thing to say about Relaxer is that it’s certainly less accessible than their previous albums which provided sing-along songs such as Breezeblocks and Left Hand Free. But this certainly isn’t a bad thing. As the band move into new territories it remains to be seen whether fans embrace new ideas or whether they will yearn for the old tones of Alt J. It’s certainly not a happy album, it’s a deep and introverted glimpse into the mind of the Joe and the band, and where they are currently at.

The album ends with the song Pleader which slowly fades in numerous instruments including a xylophone, acoustic guitar and strings. The song then opens up into a euphoric, optimistic-feeling and ambient vibe taking spontaneous turns at every opportunity. It sticks to no structure which is what we have always loved about Alt J. One thing you should always do with an Alt J album is give it numerous listens. If you don’t like it first time, try again and again until finally it dawns on you that, in fact, the album is outstanding.
